Elements, Mixtures and Compounds
Elements are the most basic type of matter found on Earth. Elements are the basic building blocks to all things found naturally on Earth. Some are found in thier natural state and some as commpounds.
Elements are made of 1 type of atom and cannot be broken sown into anything simpler.
Atoms are made of eletrons, neutrons and protons.
Protons and neutrons are found in the atoms nucleus and electrons whizz around the outside of the nucleus.
Elements are all different from each other in both their properties, bonding preferences and how many electrons, protons and neutrons they have.
The Periodic Table was put together because of these properties by a Russian scientist called Dimitri Mendeleev in 1869. Not all elements had been discovered when he started, but he was clever enough to leave spaces in the rows for these elements.
Each element has a chemical symbol. There chemical symbol is usually the first and second letter of their name like O which is oxygen, Br which is bromine and Li which is Lithium. Some of the elements like lead (Pb) and Mercury (Hg) are latin names. Lead is called plumbum and mercury is hydrargyrum.
The numbers above the chemical symbols are the elements atomic number. This is how many protons an atom has.
